Algeria stretches from the Mediterranean to the heart of the Sahara, so there is no single "best" month — there is a best month for each region. The short version: the Sahara from October to April, the north in spring and autumn, the coast in summer. Here are the details.
Three climates
- The Mediterranean north (Algiers, Oran, Béjaïa, Annaba): mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers.
- The interior and High Plateaus (Constantine, Sétif, Batna): continental, with cold winters and hot summers.
- The Sahara: very hot summers, warm winter days and cold nights, especially at altitude in the Tassili and Hoggar.
Month by month
| Month | North & coast | Sahara | Our tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Cool and rainy | Sunny days, cold nights (can drop below 0 °C) | Great desert month with a warm sleeping bag. Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, on 12 January. |
| February | Cool, first almond blossom | Pleasant days, cold nights | Quiet and beautiful in the south. Ramadan is expected around February–March in 2027. |
| March | Spring begins, green landscapes | Warm days, mild nights | Excellent everywhere; combine north and south. |
| April | Flowers on the Roman sites | Warm, occasional wind | One of the best months of the year. |
| May | Warm, pleasant | Heat rising (35 °C+) | Ideal for the north; end of the desert season. |
| June | Hot, beach season starts | Very hot | Coast and mountains of Kabylie. |
| July | Hot, busy beaches | Extreme heat (often 40 °C+) | Coast only; book early. |
| August | Hot, busy beaches | Extreme heat | Coast only. |
| September | Warm sea, fewer crowds | Still very hot | Lovely for the coast and the north. |
| October | Mild, first rains | Season opens: warm days, mild nights | Excellent for the Tassili and Tadrart. |
| November | Mild, some rain | Perfect light and temperatures | One of our favourite months in the desert. |
| December | Cool and rainy | Pleasant days, cold nights; busy at year-end | Book early for the Christmas–New Year holidays. |
Temperatures are indicative and vary from year to year and with altitude.

Festivals and religious holidays
Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar and move about eleven days earlier each year. During Ramadan, daytime services slow down but evenings are festive; travel is entirely possible. The Sebeiba of Djanet takes place during the days of Ashura, and the Sbuâ of Timimoun follows the Mawlid. Exact dates are announced each year — ask us when planning.
Our advice
If you can only travel in summer, choose the coast and the mountains of the north. If you dream of the desert, aim for October–November or March–April, when both the Sahara and the north are at their best.
