The Tassili n'Ajjer holds one of the largest collections of prehistoric rock art in the world. Archaeologists group it into periods, each recording a different Sahara.

The Bubaline period

The oldest engravings show large wild animals — buffalo, elephants, rhinoceros — from a time when the Sahara was green.

The Round Head period

Enigmatic floating figures with round heads, some of them several metres tall. Sefar holds the most famous examples.

The Pastoral period

Herds of cattle, family scenes and dances: the most detailed and colourful paintings on the plateau.

Horse and camel periods

Chariots and, later, camels mark the drying of the Sahara and the arrival of the caravan age.

Remember: never touch or wet the paintings. Your guide will show you the best light for photographs.
