An extraordinary heritage

Seven sites are listed by UNESCO, from the Casbah of Algiers to the M'zab Valley. The Tassili n'Ajjer holds more than 15,000 prehistoric paintings and engravings, some dating back many thousands of years. Roman cities such as Djémila, Timgad and Tipaza are among the best preserved in the Mediterranean, and the Kalâa of Beni Hammad recalls the medieval Berber dynasties.

The Sahara in all its forms

The desert covers most of the country, and no two regions look alike: the sandstone towers of Sefar, the red dunes of the Tadrart, the volcanic peaks of the Hoggar, the endless sand sea of the Grand Erg Occidental. You can explore them by 4x4, on foot or by camel caravan.

A Mediterranean coastline
