South-east of Djanet, near the Libyan border, the Tadrart Rouge is part of the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park. For many travellers it is the most beautiful landscape in the Algerian Sahara — and the one our team at SEFAR Aventure is proudest to share.
A landscape of every shade of red
The Tadrart combines everything that makes the desert spectacular: high dunes, sandstone cliffs, needles, canyons and natural arches. The sand shifts through many shades during the day — pale gold in the morning, orange in the afternoon and deep red at sunset — so the same view never looks the same twice.
An open-air museum
When the Sahara was green, lakes and rivers filled these valleys. The people who lived here left thousands of engravings and paintings on the rock: giraffes, antelopes, elephants, crocodiles and even animal footprints. The dry climate has preserved them extraordinarily well. Your guide will lead you to the most beautiful panels, hidden in side canyons.
How to explore
Most trips combine a 4x4 for the long distances with walks of a few hours each day. You can also travel by camel, with a vehicle carrying the camp. A Tuareg guide, a cook and drivers accompany every group; no special fitness is needed, although regular walking helps on sand.
When to go
The season runs from October to early May. In summer daytime temperatures exceed 40°C. Winter days are pleasant but nights can approach freezing, so bring a sleeping bag rated to around 0°C and warm layers for the evening.
Nights in the bivouac
You sleep in a simple camp — tents or under the stars — far from any light. The sky over the Tadrart is among the darkest on earth, perfect for watching the Milky Way. Pack a headlamp and protect your phone and camera from sand with a pouch.
Our circuit
SEFAR Aventure's Tadrart Rouge circuit runs over four or five days from Djanet, including permits, transport, meals and camp. Ask us for private dates or a combination with the Tassili plateau of Sefar.
