Tassili n'Ajjer
Tassili n'Ajjer: the painted plateau of Sefar
Five days on foot and by 4x4 among the sandstone towers of the Tassili n'Ajjer and the prehistoric frescoes of Sefar, with SEFAR Aventure's Djanet team.
Red dunes, natural arches and engraved canyons on the Libyan border: the Tadrart Rouge, the most photogenic corner of the Algerian Sahara.
South-east of Djanet, close to the Libyan border, the Tadrart Rouge is where the Sahara turns red. Its dunes change colour through the day, from gold to orange to deep red, and rise against sandstone cliffs, needles and natural arches.
The Tadrart is part of the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park and its canyons are full of prehistoric engravings — giraffes, antelopes, elephants and even crocodiles, carved when lakes still covered the region. Our guides know the hidden wadis where they are best preserved.
You travel by 4x4 with short walks every day, so no special fitness is needed. Nights are spent in a simple bivouac with mattresses and blankets, and the crew cooks fresh meals at camp. This circuit runs over four or five days depending on your flight times; SEFAR Aventure adapts the pace to your group.
Airport welcome by our team and transfer to the guesthouse. Briefing on the days ahead.
Drive south-east along the Tassili escarpment to the canyon of In Djaren and its engravings, then first camp in the red sand.
The great red dunes of Moul Naga and the rock pillars of Tin Merzouga — time to climb and walk freely, sunset from the crest.
Natural arches, side canyons with rock art, and the Tiou Tatine formations before heading back north.
Return to Djanet and transfer to the airport. On a 4-day version, this day is combined with day 4.
A valid passport (6 months) and an Algerian visa or visa-on-arrival authorisation are required. We send the invitation documents you need once your booking is confirmed.
