Tassili n'Ajjer
Tadrart Rouge: red dunes and hidden canyons
Red dunes, natural arches and engraved canyons on the Libyan border: the Tadrart Rouge, the most photogenic corner of the Algerian Sahara.
Nine days of walking between hidden water pools, rock streets and natural arches, from the wadi Dider to the canyon of Essendilene.
The Tassili n'Ajjer is not only rock art: it is also a labyrinth of canyons where rainwater collects in deep pools called gueltas. This trek links several of them, from the engravings of Tin Tehrert in the wadi Dider to the shaded canyon of Essendilene, crossing passes with views over the dunes of Erg Admer.
Expect 15 to 20 kilometres a day on mostly easy ground, with a support team carrying the camp. You visit painted shelters, look for fossils, walk through stone streets and stop at the arch of Ousanelam. A good trek for a first real experience of the Sahara on foot.
Welcome at the airport and night in a guesthouse in Djanet.
4x4 drive to the wadi Dider and the engravings of Tin Tehrert, beautiful in the low evening light. First camp.
Two painted shelters, the crossing of the Emintanamast pass and a little fossil hunting on the way.
Stop at a guelta for a rest, then an optional climb for a wide view over the plateau.
A walk in the shade of the Azatorat canyon to its guelta, surrounded by vegetation.
Sandstone 'streets', desert plants and the natural arch of Ousanelam.
Crossing a pass with views over the golden dunes of Erg Admer; camp among tamarisks.
Morning walk in the Essendilene canyon, then drive back to Djanet.
