Tassili n'Ajjer
Tadrart Rouge: red dunes and hidden canyons
Red dunes, natural arches and engraved canyons on the Libyan border: the Tadrart Rouge, the most photogenic corner of the Algerian Sahara.
Fifteen days on foot with a camel caravan, from the sand sea of Tihodaïne across the Tassili of Ifedaniouene to the black volcanic hills of the Adrar n'Ajjer.
North-west of Djanet, the landscapes of the Ajjer change every few days: the soft dunes of Erg Tihodaïne, the sandstone towers of the Tassili of Ifedaniouene and the Tasset plateau, then the dark lava flows and craters of the Adrar n'Ajjer. Few travellers ever reach this part of the Sahara.
This is a true expedition. You walk most of the day with our guide while the camels carry water, food and camp, and you sleep under the stars or in a tent. Rock-art sites, Neolithic tools and remarkable rock formations punctuate the route. Good fitness and a taste for simple camp life are essential.
Welcome at the airport and night in a guesthouse in Djanet.
Long 4x4 drive north-west to Erg Tihodaïne, where the camel caravan joins you. First camp in the sand.
Five days of walking among sandstone towers and corridors, with three major rock-art sites and the striking needle known as the Great Tooth of Edjelé.
Crossing the open plain of Afara, then onto the Tasset plateau past rock shelters and ancient campsites.
Four days in a black and ochre world of lava flows and craters, with rock art and an excursion to the great collapse crater of Ouanjerolan.
Descent by the Tin Selfine pass, farewell to the caravan and 4x4 drive back to Djanet.
Transfer to Djanet airport for your flight.
