Tassili n'Ajjer
Tadrart Rouge: red dunes and hidden canyons
Red dunes, natural arches and engraved canyons on the Libyan border: the Tadrart Rouge, the most photogenic corner of the Algerian Sahara.
Five days on foot and by 4x4 among the sandstone towers of the Tassili n'Ajjer and the prehistoric frescoes of Sefar, with SEFAR Aventure's Djanet team.
Sefar gave our agency its name, and this circuit takes you straight to it. From Djanet, our team leads you onto the Tassili n'Ajjer plateau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where wind and time have carved sandstone into towers, arches and narrow streets that look like an abandoned city.
Hidden in these corridors are thousands of prehistoric paintings and engravings: giraffes and elephants from a green Sahara, herders with their cattle, and the enigmatic "round head" figures for which Sefar is famous. Your Tuareg guide knows where every panel is and how to read it.
Days are spent walking at an easy pace with the camp carried for you; evenings around the fire, under one of the darkest skies on earth. The circuit ends in the golden dunes of Erg Admer. SEFAR Aventure handles permits, park fees, transport, meals and camping, so you only have to look and listen.
Welcome at Djanet airport by the SEFAR Aventure team and transfer to a guesthouse in the palm grove. Late afternoon walk up to the old ksar for the view over the oasis.
Drive to the foot of the plateau and climb onto it by a traditional trail, with donkeys or vehicles carrying the luggage. First rock shelters in the afternoon and a night camp among the stone towers.
A full day exploring Sefar with your guide: its maze of sandstone streets hides some of the most famous paintings of the Sahara, including the round-head figures and pastoral scenes.
Morning among the shelters and rock formations of Tin Tazarift, then descent from the plateau and return towards Djanet for a hot shower.
Sunrise drive to the golden dunes of Erg Admer, then transfer to Djanet airport for your flight.
A valid passport (6 months) and an Algerian visa or visa-on-arrival authorisation are required. We send the invitation documents you need once your booking is confirmed.
