Tassili n'Ajjer
Tassili n'Ajjer: the painted plateau of Sefar
Five days on foot and by 4x4 among the sandstone towers of the Tassili n'Ajjer and the prehistoric frescoes of Sefar, with SEFAR Aventure's Djanet team.
The great Tassili plateau trek: fifteen days on foot through the stone forests, gorges and painted cities of Sefar, Tamghit and Jabbaren, with a camel caravan.
The Kel Medak are the Tuareg of the Tassili plateau, and this is their country: a high sandstone tableland cut by gorges and covered with stone 'forests' and 'villages'. Our longest Tassili trek climbs onto the plateau by a traditional path and crosses it from north to south, visiting the most famous rock-art sites of the Sahara.
You spend whole days in Tin Tazarift, Sefar, Tamghit and Jabbaren, where thousands of paintings tell the story of the green Sahara. Walking is three to six hours a day, sometimes on rough ground, and nights are spent in bivouac. Sefar is the place that gave our agency its name; seeing it slowly, on foot, is the best way.
Welcome at the airport and night in a guesthouse in Djanet.
Short drive to Imi n'Oumrat, where the caravan is loaded, then a walk up the wadi Tadjouïset to camp near a guelta.
Climb through a gorge onto the plateau, then three days among stone forests, dune corridors and painted shelters around Wan Tissoukaï and Tin Tekelt.
Narrow gorges and 'villages' of rock towers hiding some of the finest paintings of the Tassili.
A full day in the rock-art city of Sefar, including its famous round-head figures, then camp in the wadi Ni Touhami.
Shelters of Tamghit and a canyon viewpoint over a valley of Saharan cypresses, then across the plateau to the guelta of In Essou.
Two days at Jabbaren, whose name means 'the giants', with its huge painted figures and views towards Erg Admer.
Last painted sites and a camp facing the Adjefou mountain.
Descent from the plateau by the Ijafen pass, picnic in a wadi and return to Djanet for its market.
