Overview

Around Tamanrasset, the Hoggar (Ahaggar) rises in a landscape of basalt needles and volcanic peaks, with Algeria's highest summit, Mount Tahat, close to 3,000 metres. It is a darker, more dramatic Sahara than the dunes further north.

The highlight is the Assekrem plateau, where Charles de Foucauld built his hermitage in 1911. Sleeping nearby lets you watch the sun come up over the Atakor massif — a moment many travellers describe as the most beautiful of their trip.

Along the way, SEFAR Aventure introduces you to the Tuareg families of the region: tea ceremonies, bread baked in the sand and stories of the caravan routes. Travel is by 4x4 with short walks, and nights alternate between guesthouse and camp. Bring a warm layer: nights on the plateau can drop below freezing in winter.
