Tamanrasset & the Hoggar
Hoggar & Assekrem: sunrise over the Atakor
Volcanic peaks, Tuareg camps and a night near Charles de Foucauld's hermitage to watch the sun rise over the Hoggar mountains.
A three-week camel expedition across the central Sahara, from the volcanic Atakor to the edge of the Ténéré and the canyons of the Tassili n'Ajjer, ending in Djanet.
For centuries, caravans linked the Hoggar and the Tassili. This expedition follows their spirit over about twenty days of walking: down from the Atakor plateau, across granite valleys and long open plains, past the wells of Tadnest and Tabakat, along the edge of the Ténéré and the dunes of Erg Admer, and finally through the canyons of the Tassili to the oasis of Djanet.
It is a real caravan journey, for travellers who already know the desert. Days are long, comfort is simple and everyone helps at camp. In return you live the rhythm of the cameleers, cross landscapes few people have seen and arrive in Djanet with the feeling of having truly crossed the Sahara.
Welcome at Tamanrasset airport by the SEFAR team and transfer to a guesthouse.
Free morning in Tamanrasset, then 4x4 drive to meet the camels and cameleers at Ezarnen.
First days of walking across the Atakor plateau and down through the Tahifet valley, past wells and dry riverbeds.
Long plateau stages, tamarisk valleys and granite boulder fields towards the Serkout massif.
Water stop at the well of Tadnest, then wide plains and quartz passes to the threshold of the Ténéré.
The longest stages of the journey across the Tafassasset, with a water refill at the well of Tabakat.
Skirting the dunes of Erg Admer to camp among small sand hills.
Four days among cliffs, canyons and sand-filled rock towers on the southern edge of the Tassili n'Ajjer.
The caravan reaches the oasis of Djanet; visit of the palm grove and night in a guesthouse.
