Overview

This journey begins and ends in Algiers, with time for the Casbah and the botanical garden, but its heart is in the far south. From Tamanrasset you head into the volcanic Atakor, visit Charles de Foucauld's hermitage on the Assekrem plateau and then walk for several days with a camel caravan through the Taessa massif and across basalt plateaus to the guelta of In Outer.

Expect three to five hours of walking a day, sometimes at altitude; no technical skills are needed, just good stamina. Nights in the mountains are spent in bivouac, with hotels in Tamanrasset and Algiers.
