Tamanrasset & the Hoggar
Hoggar & Assekrem: sunrise over the Atakor
Volcanic peaks, Tuareg camps and a night near Charles de Foucauld's hermitage to watch the sun rise over the Hoggar mountains.
From the white city of Algiers to the oasis villages and rock art of the Hoggar, mostly by 4x4 with short walks: an easy introduction to two very different Algerias.
In a single week this circuit shows two faces of Algeria. You start with the Casbah and the bay of Algiers, then fly south to Tamanrasset and set off by 4x4 into the Hoggar: the rock-art sites of Hirafok, the oasis village of Tazrouk below its rock needle, and the granite of Tagmart.
Walks last about an hour, so the trip suits most travellers, including families. Nights are spent in comfortable bivouacs and a guesthouse in Tamanrasset. Domestic flights are booked for you on request.
Welcome at the airport, walk in the city centre and welcome dinner.
The Casbah and Notre-Dame d'Afrique, then evening flight to Tamanrasset.
4x4 drive to the rock-art sites around Hirafok, short walk and bivouac near the village.
The gardens and village of Tazrouk and the rock needle that watches over it.
Granite boulders and rock art at Tagmart; last bivouac.
A prehistoric site near town, the market and a farewell dinner.
Transfer to Tamanrasset airport for your flight.
