Overview

This méharée takes the long way to the Assekrem: north from Tamanrasset through granite massifs and the basin of the wadi Tanget, past engravings and historic passes, to the plateau and Charles de Foucauld's hermitage. The next day you climb Mount Tahat (about 2,900 m), the roof of Algeria, in around three hours.

The return crosses gorges, tamarisk wadis and balcony paths back towards Tamanrasset. You can ride the camels part of the way and walk the rest. Good fitness is required; previous camel experience is not.
