Timimoun
Grand tour of Algeria: Roman cities, Saharan oases, Oranie and the M'zab
Fifteen days that use domestic flights to cover the whole country: Algiers, Timimoun, El Ménia, the M'zab, Timgad, Tiddis, Djemila, Oran, Tlemcen and Tipaza.
Our longest cultural journey: seventeen days from the Mediterranean to the great dunes, with Roman cities, Constantine, the Aurès, the M'zab, El Goléa and the Gourara oases of Timimoun.
This journey takes the great civilisations route from Oran to the M'zab, then continues deep into the Sahara. After Tipaza, Algiers, Djemila, Constantine, Timgad, the Aurès, Biskra and Bou Saâda, you reach Ghardaïa and keep going south to El Goléa and its lake, then west across the desert to Timimoun.
In Timimoun, the 'red oasis', you discover the ksour of the Gourara and the foggaras, ancient underground channels that still water the gardens, with an optional outing in the dunes. You fly back to Algiers at the end. Accommodation is in guesthouses and characterful hotels; long drives are part of the experience.
Arrival and evening walk; the next day Santa Cruz fort, the Bey's palace and the coast of Aïn El Türck.
Roman Cherchell and Tipaza, the Royal Mausoleum, then the Casbah, museums and gardens of Algiers.
The mountain-top Roman city of Djemila, the bridges of Constantine and the grid-plan city of Timgad.
Imedghassen, the Ghoufi balconies and El Kantara, the palm groves of Biskra and the Étienne Dinet museum in Bou Saâda.
El Atteuf, Beni Isguen and the Boulila tower.
Old Ghardaïa and Melika, then the road south to El Goléa for a sunset over the erg.
The tomb of Charles de Foucauld in El Goléa, then a long Saharan drive west to Timimoun.
The ksour and foggaras of the Gourara, with an optional outing in the dunes.
The craft market of Timimoun, then domestic flight back to Algiers.
