Overview

Around Timimoun, the dunes of the Grand Erg Occidental meet a string of oases watered by foggaras, the ancient underground channels of the Sahara. This méharée crosses this landscape on foot: high dunes, wells, abandoned forts and fortified ksour like Arelab, with nights in the sand.

You walk several hours a day in sand, but no experience of camel trekking is needed and the pace stays relaxed. It is a gentle introduction to caravan life, framed by two nights in a hotel in Timimoun.
