Cherchell

Ancient Iol-Caesarea, capital of King Juba II of Mauretania: an amphitheatre, Roman baths and one of the finest collections of ancient statues in North Africa, in a quiet port town.

Overview

About 30 km west of Tipaza, the port town of Cherchell was Iol, a Punic harbour, before King Juba II made it his capital around 25 BC and renamed it Caesarea in honour of Augustus. Juba, a scholar raised in Rome, and his wife Cleopatra Selene — daughter of Cleopatra and Mark Antony — filled the city with Greek and Roman art. Under Rome it became the capital of the province of Mauretania Caesariensis.
