Algiers

"El Bahdja", the radiant white city: the UNESCO-listed Casbah, Ottoman palaces, a bay framed by hills, botanical gardens and lively boulevards.

Overview

Algiers rises in tiers from its bay, its white buildings earning it the name El Bahdja — "the radiant". Founded as the Phoenician port of Ikosim, it became the capital of an Ottoman regency in the 16th century and of independent Algeria in 1962. Most international flights land here, and the city deserves two or three days.

Top attractions

  • The Casbah (UNESCO, 1992) — stairways, Ottoman houses, the Ketchaoua Mosque and palaces such as Dar Mustapha Pacha and Dar Aziza.
  • Notre-Dame d'Afrique — the basilica above the bay, reached by cable car, with one of the best views of the city.
  • The Jardin d'Essai du Hamma — a historic botanical garden of palms, ficus and bamboo, next to the National Museum of Fine Arts.
  • The Martyrs' Memorial (Maqam Echahid) and its esplanade above the city.
  • The Grande Poste and the boulevards of the city centre; the Great Mosque of Algiers (Djamaa El Djazair) and its minaret dominate the eastern bay.

Culture

Algiers is the home of chaâbi music, of Andalusian orchestras and of a lively café culture. Food lovers should try rechta noodles, grilled fish at the port and pastries from the Casbah's old bakeries.

Experiences

  • A guided walk through the Casbah with a local who knows its families.
  • Sunset from the Martyrs' Memorial or the cable car.
  • A day trip to Tipaza and Cherchell.
