The Sahara regions

An overview of the Algerian Sahara region by region — the far south-east, the Hoggar, the great western ergs, the Gourara and the M'zab — to help you choose where to go.

Overview

The Algerian Sahara is not one landscape but many. This page helps you compare the regions; each has its own guide.

The regions

  • Tassili n'Ajjer and Djanet — sandstone plateaus, rock art, the red Tadrart. The most spectacular, best for trekking.
  • Tamanrasset and the Hoggar — volcanic mountains and Tuareg culture, the Assekrem sunrise.
  • Taghit and the Grand Erg Occidental — the most accessible great dunes, a restored ksar and rock engravings.
  • Timimoun and the Gourara — red earth ksour, salt flats and the foggara irrigation channels.
  • Ghardaïa and the M'zab Valley — the cultural gateway to the Sahara, five UNESCO-listed fortified towns.
