Djanet & the Tadrart Rouge

An oasis town of palms and old ksour at the foot of the Tassili, and the gateway to the red dunes and engraved canyons of the Tadrart — the home base of SEFAR Aventure since 1980.

Overview

Djanet lies in a long valley of palm gardens below the cliffs of the Tassili n'Ajjer, more than 2,000 km from Algiers by road. Its three old districts — El Mihan, Zelouaz and Adjahil — stand on rocky spurs above the oasis, and the town is the cultural heart of the Kel Ajjer Tuareg. For travellers, it is the starting point for the Tassili plateau, Erg Admer and the Tadrart Rouge.

Top attractions

  • The old ksar of El Mihan and the view over the palm grove at sunset.
  • The "crying cow" engraving near town, one of the most famous Neolithic carvings in the Sahara.
  • Erg Admer — golden dunes 30 km from town, ideal for a first evening in the desert.
  • The Tadrart Rouge — south-east of Djanet near the Libyan border, red dunes, natural arches and canyons full of engravings: Moul Naga, Tin Merzouga, In Djaren, Tiou Tatine.
  • Essendilène — a cool canyon with a permanent pool, reachable on a day trip.

Culture

Djanet is known for the Sebeiba, a Tuareg ceremony of drums, songs and dance held each year during the days of Ashura and inscribed by UNESCO on its list of intangible heritage. Tuareg silverwork, leather and the famous indigo-dyed veils can be found in the town's small shops.

Experiences

  • Sunset from the crest of the red dunes of Moul Naga.
  • Bivouac nights in the Tadrart with tea and bread baked in the sand.
  • Meeting local families and artisans in the old districts.
