Tipaza

Roman, Punic and early Christian ruins on a headland above the sea, the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania and the Chenoua mountain — a UNESCO site an hour from Algiers.

Overview

About 70 km west of Algiers, Tipasa (Tipaza) was a Phoenician trading post, then a Roman colony and an early Christian centre. Its ruins spread over two headlands above the Mediterranean, among pines and wild flowers, with Mount Chenoua on the horizon. The site was listed by UNESCO in 1982, and Albert Camus celebrated it in his essay "Nuptials at Tipasa".
