Tadrart Rouge: red dunes and hidden canyons
Red dunes, natural arches and engraved canyons on the Libyan border: the Tadrart Rouge, the most photogenic corner of the Algerian Sahara.
Eight days in western Algeria: Oran and its Spanish fort, the coast to Béni Saf, the Zianid capital Tlemcen with Sidi Boumediene and Mansourah, and the mountain town of Nedroma.
The west of Algeria has a character of its own, shaped by Spanish garrisons, Andalusian refugees and the Zianid sultans of Tlemcen. You start in Oran, with Santa Cruz fort, the Bey's palace and the beaches of Les Andalouses, then follow the coast to Béni Saf.
Tlemcen is the highlight: the Méchouar citadel, the Great Mosque, the shrine of Sidi Boumediene, the ruined walls of Mansourah and the plateau of Lalla Setti. A day in Nedroma or the Beni Snous valley and a return via Mascara complete this relaxed, comfortable circuit.
