Constantine
Great civilisations of Algeria: from Tipaza to Ghardaïa
Thirteen days across 2,000 years of history: Oran, Roman Tipaza and Cherchell, Algiers, Djemila, Constantine, Timgad, the Aurès, the oasis of Biskra and the M'zab valley.
Algeria's second city: a lively Mediterranean port with a Spanish fort above the bay, Ottoman mosques, grand boulevards and the birthplace of raï music.
Oran, "El Bahia" (the bay), is Algeria's second city and the capital of the west. Founded in the 10th century by Andalusian sailors, it was held by Spain for most of the 16th to 18th centuries, then by the Ottomans and the French. Each period left its mark: forts on the mountain, a mosque built by the Ottoman bey, Art Deco boulevards and a seafront promenade.
Oran is the cradle of raï, the popular music inscribed by UNESCO in 2022, and remains a city of music and nightlife. Try karantika, a chickpea flan sold in bread on the street, and fish along the corniche towards Aïn El Turck.
