Tlemcen

The "pearl of the Maghreb": former Zayyanid capital, rich in Andalusian art — the Great Mosque, the shrine of Sidi Boumediene, the Mansourah minaret and the Mechouar citadel.

Overview

Set on a green plateau at the foot of mountains in the far west, Tlemcen was the capital of the Zayyanid kingdom from the 13th to the 16th century and a great centre of learning and trade. Refugees from Al-Andalus brought their art, music and crafts, making Tlemcen one of the finest showcases of Hispano-Moorish architecture in North Africa.

Top attractions

  • The Great Mosque of Tlemcen (Almoravid, 12th century) and its carved stucco dome.
  • Sidi Boumediene — the shrine, mosque and madrasa of El Eubbad, with superb tiles and carved doors.
  • Mansourah — the tall ruined minaret and walls of a 14th-century Marinid camp-city.
  • El Mechouar — the citadel and restored royal palace of the Zayyanids.
  • Lalla Setti plateau — a viewpoint over the city, reached by cable car.
  • The Cascades of El Ourit — waterfalls in a gorge just outside town.

Culture

Tlemcen is famous for its Andalusian music (gharnati), its traditional wedding costume — the chedda, inscribed by UNESCO in 2012 — and for crafts such as weaving and embroidery.
