Annaba

Ancient Hippo Regius, the city of Saint Augustine: Roman ruins, the Basilica of Saint Augustine above the bay, a lively Cours de la Révolution and beaches stretching towards Tunisia.

Overview

Annaba, Algeria's fourth city, lies on a wide bay near the Tunisian border. As Hippo Regius it was a royal Numidian city, then a prosperous Roman port where Saint Augustine was bishop from 396 to 430. Its tree-lined Cours de la Révolution, cafés and beaches make it a pleasant base for the north-east.

  • The Basilica of Saint Augustine — built in the late 19th century on a hill overlooking the ruins and the bay.
