The Mediterranean coast

About 1,200 km of Mediterranean shore: Roman ruins by the sea, capes and coves, port cities and the green mountains of Kabylie — a perfect complement to the Sahara.

Overview

Algeria's coastline runs for about 1,200 km between Morocco and Tunisia. Mountains often drop straight into the sea, creating capes, cliffs and sheltered coves, while the great port cities each have their own character. It is the Algeria of olive groves, fishing harbours, Roman ruins and summer evenings on the corniche.

Along the coast, from west to east

  • Oran — the lively capital of the west and its corniche beaches.
  • Tipaza and Cherchell — Roman cities and a royal mausoleum west of Algiers.
  • Algiers — the Casbah and the bay.
  • Kabylie and Béjaïa — Gouraya National Park, Cap Carbon and the coves of Aokas and Tichy.
  • Jijel — the Corniche Jijelienne and the Marvellous Caves.
  • Annaba — Hippo Regius and the Edough forests.

Experiences

  • Swimming in clear water from June to September.
  • Coastal hiking in Gouraya and the Edough.
  • Grilled sardines and fish soup in the fishing ports.
  • Combining a week in the Sahara with a few days by the sea.
